How to Use AI Video Summaries: Distill Video Key Points with VideoVault
The Second Pain of Video Bookmarking
Bookmarking is not the end. Once you have hundreds of saved videos, a new problem emerges: you can never watch them all. Should you rewatch the whole thing when reviewing? Which video covers the exact point you need right now?
AI video summaries solve exactly this: distill a video into a paragraph so you can quickly decide whether a full watch is worth it and locate key information.
VideoVault’s AI Summary Architecture
VideoVault’s AI calls go through a unified OpenAI-compatible /chat/completions endpoint. Any service compatible with the OpenAI API format works:
- OpenAI: GPT series
- DeepSeek: deepseek-chat and others
- Tongyi Qianwen: qwen series (compatibility mode)
- Ollama: any open-source model hosted locally: zero cost, zero latency, zero privacy concerns
Users only need to fill in the API Base URL, API Key, and model name in settings. All calls support timeouts and error handling, so the UI never freezes on model service failures.
The testAIConnection function handles connection testing: after configuration, you can verify model service reachability in one click.
Mock Fallback When Unconfigured
A common question: can I use it without an API key?
VideoVault’s answer: yes. Without AI configured, it falls back to mock mode, returning a placeholder summary so users can fully experience the “bookmark → summarize → view” flow. This is friendly for first-time trials and demos: no need to apply for an API key first to see the effect.
Local Models and Privacy
For privacy-sensitive content, Ollama local deployment is recommended. VideoVault calls Ollama on localhost, so video metadata and summary requests never pass through any external server.
This aligns with VideoVault’s local-first philosophy: your data, your model.
Summary
AI video summaries upgrade a “bookmark folder” from a link repository into a knowledge base. By supporting any OpenAI-format service, mock fallback, and local models, VideoVault makes AI summaries workable across budgets and privacy requirements.
